Tips for Installing a Word Press Theme

by mreed on April 30, 2009

1170034_pliersIf you have Word Press and you don’t know how to work with it well, you might have trouble installing a new theme. Fortunately for you, it’s not that difficult and it’s something you can learn quite easily.

You have to have a self hosted blog, though, because the free Word Press blogs won’t let you upload themes. Download the themes that you like and unzip them. There are many places where you can find these themes, including just doing a search for them and looking through what you come up with. Once you’ve unzipped the themes, you can open your FTP client and connect to the site that you want to upload to. Open the folder that you have your blog in and then open the wp-content folder. After that, open the themes folder and upload your unzipped files to it. When you’re done you’ll want to open your Web browser and log into the Word Press account that you have. You should see your new themes that you’ve uploaded there. Click the one that you like and Word Press will automatically apply it to your blog.

Adding widgets afterward can help to make your blog much more interactive, as well, so feel free to put some on there so people who find your blog can enjoy it even more.

How to Add WordPress to Your Web Site

by mreed on April 22, 2009

798358_linksIf you already have a Web site and want to add Word Press to it, it shouldn’t be all that difficult. Word Press is the most popular of all of the blogging platforms out there, so it has to be user friendly. Otherwise, most people wouldn’t use it.

To use it on your site, you’ll need to download it and unzip the folder onto your hard drive. In the control panel that’s been given to you by your server company, create a database and a corresponding user. Go to the file that you unzipped and put in the proper information for the database name, user, and password. Then, re-save the file so that the information stays put. Using FTP, upload the folder that you saved to your site. Once that’s been completed, go to your site normally and follow the on-screen instructions to run the application.

Once you’ve done that your site should load properly for you and for anyone else who goes to it. Now it’s time to add plugins!

If you have any problems there is a Word Press codex that you can go to, and there are many tutorials out there on the Internet to help you if something isn’t working quite right for you. Millions of people use Word Press, so if you aren’t sure about something, it’s a safe bet that someone out there knows the answer to your question and can help you.
